MORPC Regional Brainstorming Session after annual meeting/luncheon April 19th
|
The Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC) plays a crucial role in making Central Ohio bicycle friendly. In July, 2005 MORPC adopted, at our urging, a policy that requires every transportation project that uses MORPC federal transportation funding to accommodate bicycling and walking. MORPC continues to implement that policy and to work to make bicycling and walking part of the transportation mainstream. That is why it is important to the bicycling and walking community of Central Ohio to attend the "Regional Brainstorming Session" from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Thursday April 19, 2007 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. You can register for this FREE event by going to www.morpc.org. You should also consider attending the annual MORPC meeting/luncheon from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. just before the brainstorming session. Individual tickets for the meeting/luncheon are only $60 for a wonderful lunch, networking, and to hear keynote speaker Dr. Jennifer James, a researcher, writer, and commentator who is an Urban Cultural Anthropologist and formerly a professor at the University of Washington Medical School. For more details, and to register, go to the MORPC website.

11/28/2006-- Diverse Communities Survey: Help SRTS Gather Information
| The traditional Safe Routes to School model uses the 5 "E's" - engineering, education, encouragement, enforcement and evaluation - to accomplish two main goals: increase the number of students who walk and bicycle to school, and make walking and bicycling to school safer. This widely accepted standard program has its developmental roots in largely suburban settings. However, many schools and communities experience a different set of circumstances related to active transportation that remain unaddressed in most of the widely available resources and guidance. The SRTS National Partnership has created the Diverse Communities Committee to help identify existing resources and gaps in resources for three populations: large urban school communities, rural school communities, and students with disabilities. Your input is needed to aid in decision making. Please take the time to complete a brief survey.

Public Invited to Open House for Proposed Downtown Bike Link

The trail will provide a much needed east-to-west link in the City's trail system, and will also be part of the statewide Ohio-to-Erie Trail. The public is invited to attend an open house to view the preliminary plan for this trial on Monday, October 23, from 6:00-8:00 pm at North Bank Park Pavilion, 311 W. Long Street

New Section of Trail Links Westerville to Easton
The scheduled opening of a half-mile section of the Alum Creek trail near Strawberry Farms on June 1 will create an uninterrupted seven-mile length stretching from Westerville to Easton for walkers, runners and cyclists, according to "This Week" community newspapers. Brad Westall, greenways planner for the Columbus Parks and Recreation Department, says the trail's main feature is safety. "This section of trail goes under I-270, state Route 161 and Morse Road, which is an extremely safe feature," said Westall. "People using the trail won't have to take the safety risk of crossing traffic." The Alum Creek Trail, when complete, will measure 22 miles and will link downtown Westerville to Three Creeks Park in Obetz. Scheduled for completion by the end of 2008, the 22-mile section is just a small part of the 450-mile Ohio-Erie Trail, which will meander across the state from Cincinnati to Cleveland. When done in 2010, it will be the longest paved trail in the U.S., according to Westall.

Let's All Try to be Cycling Ambassadors (B. Williams, contributor)
As cyclists, we have all been confronted on the road by irate drivers. We have all experienced the honks, the birds, the profanities, and even the occasional projectiles of beer cans, trash and various fruit - and it makes our blood boil. The temptation is strong to engage, to shout back, to catch up to them at the next light and give them a piece of our mind or even kick their tails. But, in my opinion, engaging them in any way other than a polite wave or just ignoring them completely is the wrong thing to do.
